We Are Not Alone

In the past, using the Arecibo telescope, the largest single-dish radio telescope in the world meant researchers had to make the long trek into the jungles of Puerto Rico. As with most telescopes, Arecibo is located as far as possible from civilization in order to reduce the electromagnetic interference and “pollution” leaked out by large communities.

As shown in the film “Contact” life at Arecibo — as with any major observing site — can be almost monastery-like in its remoteness.

Nevermind that the ’scope’s only about fifteen minute’s drive from the interstate, and located in the fourth largest metropolitan city in Puerto Rico. Welcome to my hometown, where not even having an Internet2 Connection is enough to rescue your reputation from the toilet. Now you know why I live here instead.

Preparations at my ?real,? soon-to-be-inaugurated webspace is humming along nicely, thank you. Not like I write anything of much import here, but I figured it?d make things easier for me (and maybe even for you, too) if I avail myself of more capable tools for managing information (read: content management system) than the amalgalm of free, remotely-hosted tools (blogger, blogback, slique-gb) that I am currently using. So far I’ve tinkered with PHP-Nuke and Moveable Type. BlogVeterans: any thoughts?

In Praise of Clutter

I have seen this story pointed out numerous times over the past few weeks. The author makes the case that our cluttered desks reflect the “real” way our mind organizes information. I respectfully disagree: I believe organization is a discipline that can be cultivated. What do you think?
