Road Rules

If you’re ever at a rock show and a roadie tries to brag at you about his glamorous life feel free to laugh in derision. The work of a roadie is so not glamorous nor exalted. It is brutal, grinding, thankless, anonymous work. I was appreciative before of the folk who labored in obscurity to help put a show together. But now that I’ve walked a mile in their shoes, I am in awe. Either these people are vying for (well-deserved) canonization or they’re really, really out-of-touch, because there are about a jillion jobs out there that are vastly easier, safer, and more lucrative. I suspect that a lot of them do it out of love for music and the music “scene.” Sort of like how you keep loaning money to your slacker brother. You know you’ll never see that Andrew Jackson again but, come on, he’s family, you can’t just leave him hanging.

So, yea, I worked with a local production company setting up a couple shows: one, for MTV pretty boys Sugar Ray, and the other, for deadhead wannabes Guster. Was in too much pain to document the first, but I did shoot the second show, where Guster played along with opening band Kathleen Edwards.
